Year 12 BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts student Megan Lofthouse-Mason attended an awards ceremony on 23rd June 2017 for the Wicked Young Writer Awards, hosted at the Apollo Victoria theatre in London, home of the musical 'Wicked'. Megan was a finalist in the 15-17 years category for the 'For Good' award and was one of 120 selected from over 4000 entries. The ceremony comprised of a workshop, performances from the cast of Wicked, rehearsed readings of winning entries, as well as being able to listen to weird and wonderful anecdotes from the visiting authors/judges.
Megan is an avid fanfiction writer and reader and her entry focused on the impact that we can have on each other in a world that is dominated by negativity.
Megan said 'I used a quote from ABC's 'Once Upon A Time' as my stimulus, telling you that you decide your fate and who you want to be is up to you and no one else. I focused on writing about the power we can have within ourselves. We are strong, independent human beings who can rely on who we are to be successful, to be perfect; that we don't need to have someone rescue us, we can do that ourselves. We can be powerful, we can be our own fairy godmother in our story.'
'The day was a great opportunity, giving me skills that I can harness at a later date to create a piece of poetry/writing that considers different moods. It definitely was an amazing experience. I'm going to keep entering until I cannot anymore just for another chance to get on that stage!'
