Politics Trip to Parliament December 2023

Our Year 13 Politics students set off early to London to tour the Houses of Parliament, have a Q&A with Lord Faulkner, Deputy Leader of the House of Lords, on the role and effectiveness of that chamber and a Q&A with James Cartlidge MP’s Chief of Staff, Hannah Stanton on her role and her route into politics. We also were able to watch Ministerial Questions on Education in the Public Gallery, seeing close up the role Parliament plays in holding our government to account.

Ipswich Arras School Exchange: One Sixth Form College, Ipswich and Lycée Guy Mollet, Arras

18 students from One Sixth Form College are, this week, taking part in an exchange with students of the Lycée Guy Mollet as part of on-going collaboration between the twinned towns of Ipswich and Arras.  The trip, made possible with the invaluable support of the Ipswich Arras Association, continues a tradition of over 30 years of events promoting collaboration between the towns.

They were welcomed at a reception at the Hotel de Ville before enjoying the historic sites of the city and the renowned Arras Christmas Market.

Stéphane Prince, Arras town councillor, spoke in his welcoming speech of the importance of ‘young people having the invaluable opportunity to enjoy cultural exchange, ensuring the future of open dialogue and collaboration between partners.’

The Arras and Ipswich students have been discovering the shared history of the two towns, including the importance of the wool industry in the Middle Ages and the role of Ipswich soldiers and the Suffolk Regiment in the Battle of Arras in 1917.  In the year of the 550th anniversary, they have also learnt about the importance of Cardinal Wolsey in furthering Anglo-Franco relations with the historic meeting between Henry VIII and Francis I of France not far from Arras.

Our students have been immersed in the French language, receiving a warm welcome from their host families and looking forward to welcoming their French counterparts back to Ipswich in April.

The Hold, Suffolk Archives December 2023

Ancient History and History Year 12 & 13 students visited The Hold, Suffolk Archives. We were treated to a tour of the latest exhibition, ‘Arrivals: Celebrating Migration to Suffolk’ with a discussion on curation and the aims of the project; a chance to handle historical documents with particular emphasis on World War One and its impact on Suffolk; a tour of the building including the vault where we could learn how documents are stored. Finally, students were given a presentation by the team at The Hold on careers and volunteering, with some of our students showing a keen interest in this area.
