Tuesday 30th September 2014, saw the arrival of 13 year 11 Design Technology students from Holbrook Academy to One, for an A Level Product Design taster event. The event was organised by Craig Barker, who is attempting to create links with local schools and encourage students to study A Level Product Design at this centre.
The event started with an introduction to One, and the large selection of vocational and A Level qualifications on offer, including A Level Product Design. The students were then offered the chance to test and vote for their favourite egg holders (a mini design and manufacture task which was given to the students at the start of term, these were manufactured at Holbrook and brought to One for evaluation). Prizes were awarded for 1st 2nd and 3rd place results.
The event concluded with a design task – manufacture a cardboard chair which can withstand the weight a human being. The rules stipulated that it must be freestanding, a minimum of 6 inches off the ground, and be held together with just string. Craft knives and scissors were provided, along with 2 sheets of 500x500mm corrugated cardboard. The outcomes were fantastic; all but one group managed to create a chair which withstood the weight of a team member. The afternoon was a success, and we hope to have more in the near future.
