Local author Katie Ward visited Suffolk One to give tips to our English students and creative writing club. Katie spoke passionately about being a writer and shared her experiences of how she published her debut novel Girl Reading in May 2011. During the session the group also discussed overcoming writer’s block, planning, editing and dialogue.
Katie explained how her first book didn’t get picked up. However after taking a career break and dedicating herself to writing for a period of eight months, her second effort (Girl Reading) that has subsequently been described as ‘a wow of a first novel’ by The Times – was published.
Katie said “I really enjoyed the experience. The students seemed really engaged and asked some great questions,” she added.
English Teacher Lucia Aguilar-Gomez who organised the visit said, “Our learners can only be inspired by hearing from someone who has already made a great impression in the literary world. Gaining first hand knowledge from someone who has been there and done it is invaluable. Her passion for writing really came across well - and we are incredibly grateful that Katie gave up her time to encourage and motivate ‘the next generation’ of writers at Suffolk One.”
