WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
How often do you watch a film, read a newspaper, browse the internet or listen to music? Everyday? At least once a day? There has been a significant increase in the growth of the media’s role in our daily lives. Due to this, a variety of skills are needed to fully explore and enjoy the dynamic range of media texts. Increased access to digital media offers us new opportunities for creativity and self-expression and communication.
Through a variety of approaches, this subject will enable students to develop their enjoyment of media texts, in addition to developing a framework for critical analysis of their meanings and contexts. This subject offers students the opportunity to look at the role the media plays in their own lives on a daily basis, while also allowing them to apply those skills to their practical work.
Production work is an important component of Media Studies. The purpose of production work is you to put theory into practice, by demonstrating knowledge and understanding of technical skills in your own media productions, as well as to engage you in a creative, imaginative and appropriate activity.
Media Studies is a dynamic contemporary subject, which supports the development of analytical skills and enables you to develop critical autonomy, independent research skills and the application of theoretical concepts to a range of media texts. This course will focus on debates such as the media’s influence on contemporary culture and the way meaning is constructed in and by the mass media.
