NCS Sports Programme

Title of Case Study

NCS Sports Programme

Key Stage

16-19

Subject

Sport

Need Identified

With the new L3 BTEC standards came the excellent opportunity to plan delivery with a blank canvas. Reflecting on the delivery of the new L2 BTEC course since 2015, and the L3 BTEC 5 lesson delivery model at the same time, we needed to create opportunities for the students to succeed at a higher level at externally moderated assessments.

Case Study

Inspired by, utilising and in collaboration with the NCS programme, we will be using the 4 stages to achieve most of the pass/merit criteria across 3-4 units, both at level 2 and 3.  Further assignments will be used to obtain the distinction criteria.

The delivery will allow for significant progress against the BTEC framework, as well as the students obtaining a number of industry desired qualifications including safeguarding and first aid. Delivery will allow for numerous positive publicity opportunities with One learners delivering a Social Action Plan within the community.

The delivery phases include teambuilding at an Outdoor Centre, Skills Development, Event Planning, Event Delivery/Review.

We will collapse the curriculum for the new Sports students across both L2 & 3, for 2.5 weeks, mix up the groups to ensure diversity and peer teaching.

Level 2 Units

Level 3 Units
6 Leading - P 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 4 Leadership - P1, 2, 4, 5
11 Event - P 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 8 Coaching - P1, 2, 3, 4, 5
8 Promote and Sponsor - P 1, 2, 3, 6 10 Events - P1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
12 Industry - P 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 3 Pro Development - P3, 4, 6, 7

The initiative will free up significant amounts of time for externally assessed units, in which students historically fail to achieve comparable grades to internally moderated units.

Worth Mentioning

This actually saves the students money.  Sports students will have certain expenses throughout their course with regards to trips, added on course opportunities etc.  This initiative has no cost therefore saving money for each student. Three nights away at an Outdoor Education Centre can easily cost £200+ for example and is an excellent way to integrate new learners.

Impact

Ultimately it is designed to raise the grade profile of the Level 2 & 3 cohorts, in an engaging and enjoyable manner.  Even if a student leaves early in the programme, they are likely to have achieved industry required certification and unit accreditation as a minimum.
