Whilst UK politicians continue to debate the pros and cons of staying in the European Union, One and other Suffolk schools celebrated the culture of other countries during an annual celebration of diversity.

One took part in an event called ‘European Day of Languages’ where the college was encouraged to learn about different cultures and dialects that are spoken across Europe.

Students put on short taster sessions involving the countries of Poland and Portugal – and one staff member from Newcastle did a session on the Geordie dialect.

Set up by the Council of Europe in 2001, the occasion aims to celebrate linguistic diversity.

French teacher, Claire Robinson, said, “I think foreignness is something to embrace rather than something to be scared of, therefore we were delighted to be part of this year’s celebrations.”

Josefina De Lopaz from One discussed the Dominican Republic. She said, “Today was about representing my country in a sense. I think it’s interesting to learn about other countries and their cultures.”

Claydon primary and Chantry and Hadleigh High Schools also backed the day. Hadleigh and Claydon students were treated to a traditional French breakfast and Chantry had sessions on Japan.
