    • Description

    WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?

    If you have an enjoyment of learning about human body systems or health and disease and you have ambitions to learn more about scientific techniques and their application in health or anatomy related scientific careers - then you will enjoy the BTEC Human Biology course. A BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate is a mixed delivery course encompassing practicals that allow you to learn in the context of realistic workplace situations. As well as gaining relevant scientific knowledge, laboratory and analytical skills, you will also develop numerous transferrable skills which will enable you to progress into any career. Valued by employers and universities, the skills gained on this vocational qualification offer a clear route into employment or higher education. The Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A Level.

    Through the two year programme you will study 3 mandatory units: Principles of Applied Human Biology, Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Human Biology and Health Issues., as well as 1 specialist unit: *subject to change 

    *Genetics and Genetic Engineering: Massive advances in DNA technology over the last 30 years have driven genetics forward at an extraordinary rate, creating enormous potential for future applications. This unit will allow you to develop a deeper practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of genetics, and modern genetic engineering techniques and their uses.

    WHAT DO I NEED TO JOIN THE COURSE?

    Grade 44 in GCSE Science. Grade 4 in GCSE English. Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics is preferred based on the high mathematical content of the subject, Grade 4 will be considered based on UMS points achieved in Mathematics and grade profile across other relevant subjects.

    Please note students wishing to take Applied Human Biology shouldn't take this with Applied Science Extended Certificate or Biology A level as there is too much course content overlap between these qualifications.

    CAN I TAKE ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS?

    This course is equivalent of 1 A Level and it therefore does need to be supplemented by other qualifications. However, it is possible to do an additional course from our range of A Levels or BTEC Extended Diplomas (from other subject areas). You can discuss the suitable combinations at interview.

    HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

    This course is assessed through a combination of external (60%) and internal assessments (40%).

    WHAT ARE THE COSTS?

    There are no charges to study this course at One. However, you will be expected to fund travel to and from any educational visits.

    WHAT IS THE DURATION?

    Human Biology Level 3 Extended Certificate is a two year course.
