What does the course involve?

If you enjoy GCSE Science and have ambitions to learn more about the practical application of scientific techniques in the medical world, then this course is for you.

This is a mixed delivery course with lots of practical work, which will enable you to learn in the content of realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You will also develop a range of transferable skills needed to start or progress in any career. Valued by employers and universities, these skills offer a clear route into higher education or employment.

Throughout the two-year programme, you will study 7 mandatory units (Principles and Applications of Science I and II, Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques, Science Investigation Skills, Laboratory Techniques and their Application, Investigative Project and Contemporary Issues in Science) and 6 specialist units including:

Biomedical Science - learn about the three key areas in biomedical science: haematology, histology and cytology, and biochemical balance, and how these areas are used to diagnose and treat disease.

Microbiology - carry out practical work to prepare and use different types of growth media and different inoculation techniques; and learn about the important role microorganisms play in medicine.

Genetics - develop a deeper practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of genetics, inheritance, modern genetic engineering techniques and their uses.

Medical Physics - learn how surgery today is faster, less invasive and more effective than ever, thanks to improvements in medical imaging technology. Also learn about health and safety, risks and the side effects of using radiation.

Physiology of Human Body Systems - learn about the normal functioning of the musculoskeletal system, lymphatic system and digestive systems, and what happens when these do not work, and the linked disorders they cause.

Diseases and Infections - learn the causes of infectious diseases and their transmission, prevention and treatment; also, the role of organisations in preventing epidemics and pandemics.
