A Level Ancient History

What does the course involve?

In year one, the course introduces students to original texts, stone inscriptions and numismatic evidence that, on close study, reveal events and their causes that seem strikingly familiar today. Students discover how the Persian Empire clashed with the Ancient Greek world and then, following victory, how the Greek world turned on itself culminating in the desperate struggle between Athens and Sparta. Remarkable original sources reveal a complex world where motives are hard to discern. The course then moves on to the Romans and an in-depth study into the breakdown of the Late Roman Republic and how it fell into the hands of one man, Julius Caesar, and his heir, Augustus.

In year two, the course goes even deeper as we study the Julio-Claudian Roman emperors and discover the military, social and political achievements of men such as Augustus, Claudius and Nero and how they are viewed in the ancient sources. Finally, we study the rise of Macedon under Philip and his heir and successor, Alexander the Great. You will gain an insight into the factors and beliefs that motivated two of the most powerful and renowned men in history.

Entry Requirements

At least 6 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 , including GCSE English Language, and meeting the entry criteria of individual subjects (Level 2 vocational qualifications at Merit or Distinction will be treated as equivalent to one GCSE)

Grade 5 in GCSE English Language.

Can I take additional qualifications?

If you choose to study Ancient History, you will usually take it alongside two other A levels. Subjects which complement Ancient History include: Geography, Modern History, Modern Languages and English. Many students studying the Sciences also enjoy this subject for its analytical approach.
