AS Level - Further Mathematics

What does the course involve?
Further Mathematics is an AS qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in A level Mathematics. As well as building on algebra and calculus introduced in A Level Mathematics, the AS Further Mathematics Pure content introduces complex numbers, matrices, conic sections, further vectors, inequalities, differential equations, and fundamental mathematical ideas with wide applications in mathematics, engineering, physical sciences and computing.
Studying AS Further Mathematics consolidates and reinforces your standard A Level Mathematics work, helping you to achieve your best possible grades. Further Mathematics qualifications are highly regarded and are warmly welcomed by universities. Students who take AS Further Mathematics are really demonstrating a strong commitment to their studies, as well as identifying themselves as having excellent analytical skills, whatever area they are considering for a career.
Entry Requirements
At least 6 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 , including GCSE English Language, and meeting the entry criteria of individual subjects (Level 2 vocational qualifications at Merit or Distinction will be treated as equivalent to one GCSE)
Grade 7 at GCSE Mathematics.
Can I take additional qualifications?
If you choose to study AS Further Mathematics, you must take it alongside three other A Levels one of which must be A Level Mathematics. It can be studied alongside A Level Maths in Year 12 or in Year 13.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is by written examination at the end of the one year course, as outlined below:
Paper 1: Core Pure Mathematics
Paper 2: Further Pure Mathematics 1 and Decision Mathematics 1
Both papers are 1 hour and 40 minutes in duration and worth 80 Marks.
What are the costs?
Students are required to have a scientific calculator for A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics, the minimum specification is the Casio FX 991-EX Classwiz.
What is the duration?
In most cases this is a one year course, with two lessons per week, although it is possible to study the course over two years with one lesson per week.
