What does the course involve?

A Level Dance provides an exciting, rigorous and challenging experience, which enables students to develop both a practical and theoretical understanding of choreography and performance in relation to the world of professional dance.

Technical training, creative choreographic classes and a variety of public performance opportunities are combined with an analysis of significant periods of dance history, to develop an appreciation of the art of dance.

Entry Requirements

At least 6 GCSEs at grades 9-4 , including GCSE English Language, and meeting the entry criteria of individual subjects (Level 2 vocational qualifications at Merit or Distinction will be treated as equivalent to one GCSE)

Grade 4 in GCSE Dance or Performing Arts or a Merit at Level 2 BTEC Dance, Grade 4 in GCSE Dance or Performing Arts or a Merit at Level 2 BTEC Dance, however, if this is not being taken then considerable practical experience is required in dance. Following an interview, prospective students may be called to enjoy a group audition workshop to ensure suitability of their chosen Performing Arts course.

Confidence with written communication is an essential skill. Previous experience in areas such as ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, street, Latin, ballroom or modern dance will be an advantage.

Can I take additional qualifications?

If you choose to study Dance, you will usually take it alongside two other A levels.

How will I be assessed?

Component One: ‘Performance and Choreography’

  • Practical Exams 50%

Through technical training and creative exploration in creative and choreographic workshops, you will develop your ability to choreograph and perform solo and group work. This practical element of the course will culminate in an assessed performance of your work to a visiting examiner.

Component Two: ‘Critical Engagement’

  • Written exams 50%

You will study the history and repertoire of professional dance companies, developing understanding of the significance of a variety of choreographers and their work. You will also reflect on and develop understanding of your own choreographic and performance practice. This theoretical component of the course will culminate in a written exam at the end of the course.

What are the costs?

There are no costs to study this course. Students should budget for trips to performances and concerts in order to gain maximum benefit from all of the Performing Arts courses. These will take place periodically throughout the year at a cost of approximately £15 - £20 per trip.

This is a two year course.
