On Friday 5th June, One Sixth Form College hosted a Public Health Hackathon, bringing together students and partners to develop innovative solutions to improve the wellbeing of young people across Suffolk.

Delivered in partnership with Volunteering Matters and The iWill Movement, on behalf of Suffolk County Council, the event provided a powerful opportunity for students to use their voice, creativity and insight to influence real-world change.

Working in teams, students explored key challenges affecting young people’s wellbeing and designed practical, impactful initiatives. The energy, collaboration and quality of thinking throughout the morning were outstanding.

Some of the standout projects included:

Young People’s Wellbeing Training

This team focused on embedding wellbeing support across all Suffolk schools and colleges, with ideas including:

  • Mandatory wellbeing-focused sessions for students
  • Training for teachers, parents and social care professionals
  • Introduction of mental health first aiders
  • Clearer information on how and where to access support
  • Increased awareness through assemblies, PSHE, posters and social media

The group also highlighted the importance of early identification of need, education around mental health and additional learning needs, and ensuring young people can help shape their own support plans.

Ipswich Town Centre Sports & Activities Hub

Another team proposed transforming empty retail spaces into a vibrant sports and wellbeing centre for young people, featuring:

  • Affordable access for ages 13 - 21
  • Multi-use sports courts, gym facilities and activity spaces
  • Social spaces such as a café or youth club area
  • Volunteer-led sessions to build skills and confidence

The idea also recognised the wider benefit of revitalising Ipswich town centre while promoting health and wellbeing.

Youth Activities Centre

A third group designed a youth-led activity centre, offering:

  • A safe, inclusive space for young people
  • Activities such as karaoke, arts and crafts, and puzzles
  • A central, accessible location encouraging connection and engagement

Real Impact Beyond the Classroom

Students presented their ideas to a panel representing Suffolk County Council and partner organisations and their peers. The strongest proposals will now be considered for further development, ensuring students’ voices directly contribute to shaping public health initiatives across Suffolk.

Alongside making a difference, students developed valuable skills in critical thinking, communication, teamwork and problem solving—providing strong examples for personal statements, CVs and future employment.

This event reflects One Sixth Form College's ongoing commitment to meaningful youth voice and co-creation, ensuring young people are actively involved in shaping the services and systems that impact their lives.

The Hackathon was a powerful reminder that when young people are given the opportunity, they bring forward thoughtful, creative and impactful solutions that can drive real change.
