The British Hedgehog Conservation Charity has given One Sixth Form College an award for their efforts in protecting hedgehogs.(According to the Animal and Plant Health agency in 2025, British hedgehogs have declined by 75% since the year 2000).
The Ipswich based educational establishment - that is part of the Eastern Education Group - was given ‘Bronze Hedgehog Friendly Campus Status’ thanks to an ongoing campaign to protect these lovable creatures.
After securing this award, students and staff are coming together with the aim of getting a silver award in the near future. As part of that, they have teamed up with a local benevolent cause called Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog Rescue. And a student called Olivia Radcliffe from the outstanding sixth form has been volunteering there for around a year.
Olivia, 17, studies A Levels is from Bramford said: “I started volunteering as I originally wanted to be a vet. I think it’s rewarding to see them get better. Hedgehogs are cute and I like nocturnal animals.”
Nina Hart said: “It’s inspiring to see our students lead this initiative with such passion, playing a vital role in safeguarding hedgehogs and demonstrating the positive impact collective action can achieve."
Paula Baker is the Chair of Trustees for Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog Rescue. Paula said: “I think the campaign is brilliant and it’s a great idea for a scheme. It’s also great that the college is already supporting us (through volunteering and donating items to us) and now I believe that they are going to be raising some money as well. It’s wonderful. We don’t have any funding for day-to-day welfare, so we rely entirely on public donations.”
