In a remarkable display of endurance and community spirit, 18-year-old Frankie Rutson from Dovercourt completed a 60km ultramarathon on Friday, June 20, running from Suffolk One College in Ipswich to Ha’penny Pier in Harwich. The challenge marked the end of Frankie’s A-Level studies and served as a personal tribute to his academic journey.
Frankie’s run wasn’t just a celebration, it was also a heartfelt effort to raise funds and awareness for Suffolk Mind, a local mental health charity. With a focus on supporting young adults navigating particularly those of similar age to Frankie in formal education. Frankie’s initiative struck a chord with many, raising over £1,200 in donations.
The self-guided route, which Frankie had meticulously planned and tested beforehand, traced his familiar bus journey through Ipswich, symbolising his final commute home from college. From One Sixth Form College, he passed through Belstead, Alton Water, Stutton, Manningtree, Mistley, Bradfield, and Great Oakley before reaching Harwich.
Accompanied by three fellow students on support bikes, Frankie was kept hydrated and energized with water and gels throughout the 6-hour and 45-minute journey. Despite high temperatures and challenging terrain, he maintained a steady pace and unwavering determination.
As he entered Harwich, members of the local running club, Harwich Runners, joined Frankie for the final 5km stretch, offering encouragement and camaraderie. Their presence added a celebratory atmosphere to the final leg of the ultramarathon, culminating in an emotional finish at Ha’penny Pier.
Frankie’s achievement not only showcased his physical and mental resilience but also highlighted the importance of mental health support for young people. His efforts have inspired many in the community and brought attention to the vital work of Suffolk Mind.
