A philosophy teacher has her mind firmly set on a marathon after signing up to take part in the iconic 26.2 mile event in London next month.

Fiona Smith works at One and got the running bug around two years ago when she took on a work wellbeing challenge.

This challenge encouraged staff to run one hundred kilometres in a year in a bid to improve their health.

Since completing this work challenge, the Ipswich resident joined the Rushmere Community Runners (RCR) running club and has subsequently completed a ten kilometre event.

The 39 year old is now preparing for her toughest challenge after booking her starting place at the London Marathon where she will be running for Suffolk MIND.

She said, “I was really lucky to get a place at the London marathon. I love running as it gives you a chance to put the world to rights and I like the competitive element to it. After a short illness I went to the doctors and they said I needed to up my physical activity – so I started running and it’s made me feel more positive in general.”

How do you feel about lining up against the likes of Mo Farah?

“To take part in the same event as amazing runners like Mare Keitany and Jo Pavey is really exciting, I’m really looking forward to it.”

And what are you looking forward to the most?

“Knowing that I’ll be in an exclusive club of around one million people who have run this will be amazing. The environment, atmosphere, picking up the medal is something I’m also looking forward to. I’ll probably be sobbing like a baby at the end – I’m sure this will be emotional – especially when I see my family.”

And why are you running for Suffolk Mind?

“So many people are affected by mental health issues.  It’s an important charity and I’m proud to be representing them.”

Frances Vickerstaff is a spokesperson for ONE. She said, “It’s great that Fiona started running again thanks to our work wellbeing challenge. We are backing her all the way and we will be looking out for her on the telly when she takes on this challenge on Sunday 28 April 2019.”
