What does the course involve?
The Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) BTEC National in Information Technology develops students' knowledge and practical skills in modern Information Technology. Learners study how IT systems support organisations, how cyber security protects digital systems, and how websites and relational databases are designed, developed and tested to meet user requirements.
Students gain practical experience of analysing client needs, designing digital solutions, developing websites, creating relational databases and applying industry-standard practices to produce effective IT solutions.
Students study four mandatory units:
Unit 1 - Information Technology Systems (Exam)
- IT hardware and software
- Networking and infrastructure
- Emerging technologies
- Legal, ethical and environmental issues
Unit 2 - Cyber Security and Incident Management (Exam)
- Cyber threats and vulnerabilities
- Security measures
- Incident response
- Risk management and business continuity
Unit 3 - Website Development (Coursework)
- Planning and designing websites
- HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- User experience (UX)
- Testing and evaluation
Unit 4 - Relational Database Development (Coursework)
- Database design
- Entity relationship modelling
- SQL
- Testing and evaluation
Across the qualification, students apply their learning through practical assignments and examinations, developing the knowledge and technical skills required for progression into higher education and the digital sector.

Both are externally assessed 90-mark examinations set and marked by Pearson.

- Unit 4 - Relational Database Development
These units are assessed through Pearson Set Assignment Briefs (PSABs), which are completed in college and externally quality assured by Pearson.
