What does the course involve?

Video games are the biggest growing industry in entertainment, taking the talent from artists, programmers, story tellers, designers, musicians, managers, marketers and leaders. The industry creates thousands of jobs yearly and is only going to grow with time. Here in East Anglia the games industry is expanding, creating more jobs and opportunities and making it the best time to learn about games production. Aspiring students will learn how to make 2D graphics for use in video games, along with 3D modelling, and more!

Learner work is generated through practical projects, briefs, workshops and engagement with industry, preparing them through the development of portfolios and materials for progression. Over the two years of the course, you will learn about the history of games and various genres allowing you to design your own games. The course will also build your creative ability and your problem solving skills as you manage and develop your own personal projects. All of the skills you will acquire will not only be applicable to games design and production but also to a variety of other career paths. 2D and 3D graphic skills can be applied to architecture, landscape design, film making, geographical simulations, art, engineering, 3D printing and much more.

Students can expect to learn about 2D graphic design and animation, using industry standard software such as Adobe Illustrator and Animate, and creating 2D games using a powerful visual scripting software called Construct 3. Students will also learn how to fluently create 3D models using Blender, a free, highly accessible 3D modelling software capable of producing professional CG 3D scenes and 3D models suitable for use in 3D games. Students will create 3D models daily and will later go onto use them in game engines like Unity or Unreal to create professional game environments.

This Games Production course is an excellent complement to other practical and computing based subjects such as Media, Graphic Design, Engineering, ICT and Computing.

After students complete this course, you can progress straight into employment or higher education. University Studies at West Suffolk College runs a BA (Hons) Games Design course. Employment opportunities include: Digital Animator; Computer Games Designer; Graphic Designer; interactive media designer, 3D architectural designer and Web Designer.
