What does the course involve?

This course will appeal to students who enjoy watching and critiquing films and who have an interest in exploring the related contexts and theoretical concepts. Film Studies is the study of visual storytelling and builds on your knowledge and enjoyment of film watching. The course looks at the range of film genres and styles on offer. You will explore a variety of theories and concepts relating to the study of film and examine the way the film industry operates in an institutional context.

Film Studies is designed to deepen students’ understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film – the major art form of the twentieth century. It offers the focus for reflection and debate, building on what students already know as spectators, consumers and fans. The interaction between film as ‘text’ and spectator is central, with a strong emphasis on the film’s producers and spectators as ‘makers of meaning’.

Over the course you will study British, American and international film and the mediums of short, experimental and non-fiction film. There is an exciting coursework element of creating a short film or writing a screenplay. Film Studies can enhance media and art based subjects in higher education. It helps to develop the skills of observation, critical analysis and reflection. Students can progress into careers and higher education in broadcasting, journalism, media production and marketing. Film Studies is compatible with a range of humanities degree pathways.

There is a lot of analysis and research into context so good writing and comprehension skills are essential.

Entry Requirements

At least 6 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 , including GCSE English Language, and meeting the entry criteria of individual subjects (Level 2 vocational qualifications at Merit or Distinction will be treated as equivalent to one GCSE)

Grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language. Students should demonstrate a desire to engage in the critical analysis of a diverse range of films at interview.

Can I take additional qualifications?

If you choose to study Film Studies, you will usually take it alongside two other A Level or A Level equivalent courses such as Extended Certificate. Subjects which complement Film Studies include: History, Philosophy, Art & Design, English Literature, Media Studies, Sociology, or Drama and Theatre Studies.
