What does the course involve?

A Level Law allows students to learn about a fascinating subject, one which covers many aspects of life. Students of A Level Law will:

  • Develop an understanding of law and how it works
  • Learn more about society from a legal perspective
  • Learn about the interaction between law and morals, justice and society
  • Learn about different areas of law – e.g. criminal law, human rights, contract and tort
  • Make connections with business, economics, history and politics
  • Develop academic skills, including analysis and evaluation
  • Be able to make an informed decision about future careers.

Law students develop a range of skills including the application of legal rules and principles to present an argument, analysis and evaluation of the law, legal issues and concepts. The course includes the opportunity to develop the research, communication, presentation, decision-making and critical thinking skills valued by industry and higher education.

This programme of study at One has been designed with the collaboration of local law firms and those working in the law industry, to ensure that students leave equipped with skills and knowledge required by the industry.

A Level Law is not just for students who want to enter the legal professions, it is a well-respected subject and is a welcome addition to many A Level programmes of study. A Level Law links well with science, forensic science, humanities, history, sociology, philosophy, economics and business.

Can I take additional qualifications?

If you choose to study Law, you will usually take it alongside two other A Levels or Extended Certificate subjects.

How will I be assessed?

A Level Law is assessed by written examinations.

The A Level qualification consists of three exam papers, each 2 hours long and each worth 33.3% of the marks. There is a variety of exam questions including:

  • Essay Questions
  • Legal Scenario Questions

How much will it cost?

There are no charges to study on the course, how­ever you will be expected to engage in the varied and rich variety of enrichment activities that specifically relate to this course. This may include visits to The Old Bailey, Supreme Court, House of Lords as well as visits to various law schools and conferences.

What is the duration?

This is a two-year course.

Entry Requirements

Six GCSEs from grade 9 to 4, plus grade 5 in GCSE English or a predominantly written based subject, such as History.
