A Level Further Maths

What does the course involve?

Further Mathematics is designed for students with an enthusiasm for Mathematics, many of whom wish to study mathematics, engineering, the sciences and economics at degree level. The Further Mathematics qualification is both deeper and broader than A Level Mathematics. As well as building on algebra and calculus introduced in A Level Mathematics, the A Level Further Mathematics Pure content introduces complex numbers, matrices, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions, differential equations and fundamental mathematical ideas with wide applications in mathematics, engineering, physical sciences and computing.

The additional work in Pure Maths makes it a good choice for students with strong mathematical skills who are planning to study mathematics, physics or engineering at university. For some Mathematics (or Mathematics based) degree courses at Oxford or Cambridge and some of the other Russell Group universities, it is a requirement.

Entry Requirements

At least 6 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 , including GCSE English Language, and meeting the entry criteria of individual subjects (Level 2 vocational qualifications at Merit or Distinction will be treated as equivalent to one GCSE)

Grade 8 in GCSE Maths.

Can I take additional qualifications?

Further Maths is an excellent qualification that complements the full range of A Levels, particularly the Sciences. You will usually take it alongside three other A Levels one of which must be A Level Maths.

How will I be assessed?

Year 1 – Mathematics A Level - 3 exam papers as outlined below:

Paper 1: Pure Mathematics 1 - 2 hours (100 marks)
Paper 2: Pure Mathematics 2 - 2 hours (100 marks)
Paper 3: Statistics and Mechanics - 2 hours (100 marks)

Year 2 – Further Mathematics A Level - 4 exam papers as outlined below:

Paper 1: Further Pure Mathematics 1– (1.5 hours, 75 marks)
Paper 2: Further Pure Mathematics 2 – (1.5 hours, 75 marks)
Paper 3: Further Pure Mathematics 3– (1.5 hours, 75 marks)
Paper 4: Further Mechanics 1– (1.5 hours, 75 marks)

What are the costs?

There are no charges to study this course. However, there may be some costs for trips.

You must have a calculator – the minimum specification is the Casio FX 991-EX Classwiz, however you will most likely wish to consider a graphical calculator for Further Mathematics (particularly if you are looking at Maths, Physics or Engineering in the future). The college has a set of HP 39Gii for use in class. Please talk to a Maths teacher for more advice.
