Name: Lucy Sayer
Secondary school: East Bergholt High School
University: University of Northampton, currently 3rd year studying Bsc Hons Occupational Therapy
Hello! My name is Lucy Sayer, and I am a former student at Suffolk One. I left One in July 2015 to go to The University of Northampton to study Bsc Hons Occupational Therapy. I previously studied Heath and Social Care at Suffolk One for 2 years before moving to university. The reason why I chose One to complete this course was that the college is a well recognised place for their health courses, which was ideal for me.
At One, I was able to work with different client groups to gain a better understanding of the role that a health professional would have. I was able to go out on Placement, and gain experience for possible future roles. In my final year at One, I struggled to decide between going to university to do Social Work or Occupational Therapy, however, with the support of peers, family, and especially the staff at One, I was able to decide that OT was the best route for me.
I am currently in my final year of OT, and I love the course! I have been on a variety of placements throughout my time at university, including adolescents mental health and community health based settings. I am also currently completing my dissertation, which I decided to look at the quality of life following a stroke for individuals aged over 50, which I have found very interesting to complete.
In terms of work, I was lucky enough to get a job at Ipswich Hospital working as a Therapy Assistant, which I do when I have time off from university. The experience that I have gained from this job has allowed me to transfer my skills from this and university, and to be able to carry in through when I qualify as an OT in July 2018 (not long!).
If I had to give any advice for future students, I'd say to definitely choose One! It was a privilege to attend One for two years, the staff and course leaders are more than helpful. Thanks to them, I have been able to attend university and work towards my dream job.
