(Holywells High School) Ipswich Academy
Subjects you studied at One:
I studied Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering where I achieved D,D,D.
Why you liked studying at One:
Since day one I felt welcome. The tutors within Suffolk ONE were incredibly supportive. All of the teachers had the industry experience which proved that they had the engineering knowledge required for the course. They were able to lead and push us to achieve well and made the lessons interesting. The equipment within the engineering department were well looked after and up to date. The Suffolk One architecture was one of the things that made the College standout and with the open spaces and great atmosphere I couldn't have chosen to study at a better place.
Why did you choose One?
Since the college was only open for over a year when I applied, the reason for my application was that it was something new, something different, and it had great open spaces. My first interaction with the tutors at the interview made me want to join the college event more.
What you are now doing?
Over the last 3 years I've been working for Kier - Suffolk Highways Contract as a Trainee Civil Engineer.
Every 6 months I rotate departments getting to know different parts of business. So far I've covered Machine Surfacing and Surface dressing designs, Control Hub emergency works, Quantity Surveying, Inspecting, Street Lighting and Structures teams.
Currently I've been moved back to Street Lighting department as this is where I would like to pursue my career further. On top of all above once a week I attend University of Suffolk to study Civil Engineering.
Over the years I got involved in, supporting winter maintenance with gritting Suffolk's roads, been a part of the Scottish Power transformer move, done different school talks and career days, as well as completed other training opportunities such as advanced drivers training at Rockingham Speedway.
What advice you would give to prospective students?
There's more than one path to get to where you want to be. You may change your career choice and you may trial different careers on the way, you may also find that some things won't go your way as they are out of your hands, but as long as you do not give up and keep going you will get to where you want to be.
Any other comments you would like to make about your time at One
I cannot thank the staff and tutors for making the Suffolk ONE experience one of it's kind. I feel like I owe my tutors a lot for helping me push myself and there's no better way for me to thank them than to getting involved and supporting One events.
