Talented Suffolk musician set to follow in the footsteps of Benjamin Britten

A Suffolk Saxophonist hit all the right notes during two auditions and has gained a place at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London.
18 year old Maddie Wegg from Ipswich found out that she secured her place at the iconic conservatoire just before Christmas after wowing music heads via two auditions.
RCM representatives were so impressed with her musical talents that they decided to award Miss Wegg with a scholarship.
She will now start her course in September 2020 where she will be looking to follow in the footsteps of legendary alumni including Suffolk born composer, Benjamin Britten.
The former One student, said, “When I found out it was such an amazing feeling. I was ecstatic. It will be incredible to be there for four years.
“This will be the perfect preparation for a career in music. When I visited (RCM), everyone was so warm, driven and dedicated. To train at a place where people like Britten, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Holst perfected their craft is mind blowing.”
Miss Wegg studied A Levels at One and is a trailblazer by becoming the first person from the largest sixth form in Ipswich to gain a place at RCM.
On being the first, she said, “I hope it inspires others to do the same and I’d say to people that if you want something, don’t be afraid to go for it – believe in your ambition.”
In terms of the future, she said, “Long term I want to be a professional musician and build a career. I want to share my love of music with others and travel. I feel I have the world at my fingertips.”
Director of Curriculum, Lois Hinsley, said, “Maddie is an exceptional talent. She was involved in many of our concerts and performed in our productions of Chicago and The King and I. This is an incredibly exciting time for her.”
In terms of One, she added, “This is our tenth anniversary and we are now beginning to see our former students achieve amazing things. We are so proud of Maddie and we can’t wait to see what happens next in her career.”
