Students link up with Institute of Directors to create Leadership Conference

14 students joined forces with the Institute of Directors (IoD) to create a leadership conference for around 100 youngsters.

One have been working with the IoD since 2012.

One was the first sixth form in the UK to have membership links with this organisation and since joining forces, over 100 students have benefitted from this arrangement becoming student members of the IoD.

This specific evening event - entitled Leadership, Skills and Attributes - offered year eleven students from across the region the chance to network, hear guest speakers and take part in group activities to find out how you can become successful in business.

Paul Hinchcliffe is the curriculum co-ordinator for business and beauty. He said, "14 students from ONE became IoD members last year and they put into practice the new skills that they have learnt from the networking opportunities they have taken part in (from their association with the IoD) by creating this event.

"They came up with the concept, organised the speakers and sorted out the programme. They have proved to be leaders themselves by creating this conference based on leadership."

17 year old Gemma Delgaty is a student at One. She was delighted to be given the opportunity of working with the IoD. She said, "Whatever skill set you have, you can be a leader. You just need to be true to yourself. That was the message that came out of the conference."

17 year old Sam Girling from Burstall is also a student at One and member of the IoD. He said, "I think the foundation to being a good leader is confidence and I have certainly gained that from being involved in this event and working with the IoD."

Student membership manager of the IoD, Joe Fitzsimons, said, "The calibre of students at One is second to none and this was reflected in how well this event was organised. They did a fantastic job and I'm really proud of the relationship we have– it continues to grow and develop."

One of the attendees was Daniel Wendon-Blixrud from Kesgrave. The 16 year old, said, "I want to push myself to take on leadership roles so I was interested to see what this event had to offer. It didn't disappoint."
