A young artist from Essex honoured a Suffolk principal by painting his portrait to celebrate a 28-year career in education.

17-year-old Eve Pemrick was commissioned to create a piece of work based on Alan Whittaker, who has recently retired from One Sixth Form Centre (One) after ten years as principal.

The Colchester fine art student is studying at One in Ipswich and was commissioned to create the work of art by her tutor (Nigel Dickerson).

She said, “I had to work in secret so I just had one photo to work with. In the photo, he looked very smiley and friendly so I tried to make the painting warm, happy and create something that would honour his legacy of setting up One.

“I heard he was chuffed with the painting so that is nice to know. I’m glad he liked it. He looks too young to retire.”

Mr Whittaker, from Felixstowe, added, “I was really touched by the paintings. The students are clearly very talented.”
