Stonewall Bake Sale

One cooked up a bake sale for charity during a month long campaign based around the history of the LGBT community in the UK.

Students from One set up an LGBT group in September 2016. Since then, they have arranged various events and most recently they turned the college corridors into a cake shop to help raise cash for the charity Stonewall.

Becky Rose works in the Learning Resource Centre. She helped set up the group and said, "We are a very inclusive environment and have an accepting atmosphere at One, however, we wanted to do more for minority groups in and around the sixth form and it was clear that when we talked to our students that they felt the same. Therefore, we created several new groups and the LGBT community was formed about 18 months ago.

"In terms of the work of this community group, this month we were involved in a number of LGBT history related activities. We started the month by getting staff and students to colour in a patch work artwork of Sir Ian Mckellen. We also had a quiz to help educate everyone about LGBT history, we are involved in a talk with the debating society and later in the week we will be having a visit from a high school.

"In addition to this we raised £71.12 for the charity Stonewall by baking cakes and selling them at lunchtime. Future plans will include other bake sales."

Student, Jess Lake, added, "I got involved to see what I can bring to it. I think it's important to have this group, it's good to have a display board to tell people what we are doing and it's always great to help out charities."

Set up in 1989, Stonewall campaigns for the equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people across the UK.
