On Monday 29th September, 14 Year 12 Hotel Events Management students visited the Salthouse Harbour Hotel in Ipswich. The stylish 4* boutique Hotel is an icon of Ipswich Marina.
The purpose of the visit was to support the finance work the students are currently doing. They are designing hotel rooms within a budget, and costing up and pricing menus and events. The students were welcomed in the restaurant by the Food & Beverage Manager at the Hotel – Danielle Bailey. After experiencing the Hotel’s hospitality, a whole floor of the Hotel was opened up to the students and they were given a guided tour of the 5 different types of rooms – from a Standard to the Penthouse suite. This gave the students an opportunity to make a direct comparison on the quality & comfort offered by the Hotel.
After lunch, based in the Penthouse suite, Danielle introduced the students to costing up bottle of House wine, and then pricing the recent Wine tasting event. This gave the group an insight into Gross Profit margins, and how they vary between items within the restaurant. They also discussed how the Hotel prices up the events it holds, based on costs but also on marketing and customer service principles.
Highlights of the visit included the view across the marina to the Orwell Bridge from the Penthouse suite, and looking at the amazing décor of the Hotel’s interior including the freestanding copper baths. The whole day was a great experience for the students, some of whom are hoping to follow this up with work experience in the Hotel later this term. The trip allowed the group to get a behind the scenes look at one of the most successful Hotels in the area.
