Thursday saw the first participation by the One rugby team of the season. They competed in a Rugby 10's tournament at Woodbridge Rugby Club, alongside the established rugby schools of Thomas Mills and Farlingaye.
Thomas Mills comfortably beat Farlingaye in the first match, before ONE faced them. A quick line break from Felix Kibble took him clear of the Thomas Mills defence to open the scoring for One, before George Thompson showed excellent scrum half opportunism to put One further ahead. Thomas Mills hit back strongly however, slowly plugging away to take a convincing lead scoring four unanswered tries. As the second half progressed, Caleb Woodard showed good strength and then sped to reduce the deficit. Thomas Mills eventually held on to a narrow 22 – 19 victory.
The second match, against a rested Farlingaye team, was beginning to open out when, after a few heavy tackles/falls, the referee abandoned the match due to a frozen pitch. The decision was unfortunate but all agreed that the pitch had become dangerous. The squad listed represented themselves and One superbly and are looking now at 7s tournament in Cambridge in March where successful teams will end up in the finals at Northampton Saints.
