‘Framework’ is an exhibition of artwork recently completed by Year 12 students from the BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design course. Each year we give our students a ‘live’ challenge to promote an aspect of a town in their region and this year we chose Colchester. Following a visit to the town’s key landmarks in January (the Castle, the Minories, St Botolph’s, Jumbo and the Town Hall), our students ended their day at firstsite, Colchester, where they were treated to a walk and talk by Sue Hogan and the team.
Back at the studio, inspired by the Berryfield Mosaic and the work of James Dodds, students were encouraged to explore a diverse range of traditional and digital media, materials and processes in order to visualise their experience of the town and its landmarks, to tell a story. The resulting campaign consisted of an A3 poster, a tourist postcard, a magazine advert and a leaflet or bookwork, that students were asked to tailor for their individual target audience.
We are most grateful to Sue and everyone at firstsite for accommodating us in January and for allowing us a space to showcase all 33 of our students’ work. Come and see it in firstsite’s main entrance between Tuesday 8th and Thursday 10th March!
