On Wednesday 18th September the Year 12 & 13 BTEC Hotel Management Groups went to visit the Edge Hotel School at the University of Essex in Colchester. The purpose of the trip was for students to get the opportunity to visit a Higher Education establishment and meet with both the course leaders, lecturers, and students to aid their understanding of progression routes for the course.
Students were given a tour of the 4* Hotel – Wivenhoe House, shown a guest rooms in the 18th Century Grade II* listed building and the new Garden wing. Some rooms in Hotel are sponsored by International hoteliers such as Hilton Worldwide and Marriott International, as well local Milsom group. This gives the students at the Hotel School relevant experience for future employers.
Before lunch in the Brassiere, the group undertook a Master Class with the Chef. Tasting strawberries, salt, sugar & vinegar – in a variety of interesting combinations; and learnt how our sense of taste was linked to smell. Students also learnt that sugar made vinegar taste nicer, whilst putting sugar on strawberries made them taste worse!
After a delicious lunch there was a tour of the University campus. Then students were given a talk by staff and students at the School, about the course and the experience they would get by studying a Degree in Hotel Management in a Hotel based environment with the University of Essex at The Edge School based a Wivenhoe House. The students came away very interested and with a clear idea of what was on offer for their futures.
