WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?
English Language at A Level is a fascinating subject for those genuinely interested in studying how language works in a wide range of contexts. Very different to GCSE, the English Language course challenges you to interrogate the science of language use and to think analytically about the ways in which language is used in a variety of contexts. You will explore the nature of language, and its contribution to our lives, as well as acquiring the concepts and methods for successful linguistic study.
- Develop a linguistic terminology which will be useful in a range of other subjects
- Explore language usage in different situations and social contexts through gender, power and technology
- Study the differences between speech and writing
- Investigate language use in an area of your choice for your non-examined assessment
- Study child language acquisition and language change.
WHAT DO I NEED TO JOIN THE COURSE?
Grade 5 in GCSE English Language and grade 5 in GCSE English Literature.
CAN I TAKE ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS?
You will find that English Language complements a range of subjects. It works well with History, Psychology, and Media Studies. However, the skills of investigation and analysis are also transferrable to Modern Languages and the Sciences. The technical accuracy of analysis of language combined with the production of media texts for a real world purpose means that the skills you will learn in this subject can be developed in various curriculum areas. The English Language A Level facilitates a range of different career paths including journalism, speech therapy, teaching, business or any area requiring a high level of spoken and written communication. The list is endless!

There are no charges to study on the course. However, non-compulsory trips run as part of the course may incur a cost.
