A Level - Drama and Theatre Studies

    • Description
    • Video

    WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE?

The course demands practical, creative and communication skills in almost equal measure. You will extend your ability to create Drama and Theatre in groups and individually. You will also be required to write about Drama and to develop your powers of analysis to become an informed critic. The course will involve taking part in productions, as well as studying plays, playwrights and theatre practitioners.

The course aims to introduce you to a range of practitioners and playwrights; exploring their work both practically and analytically. Students get the opportunity to respond to selected texts from the perspective of actor, director or designer. As well as studying set texts, practitioners and analysing live theatre in the two years, you will also take part in a group devised and group scripted performance.

The academic nature of the course makes it an excellent foundation for any Arts or Humanities study at university. This course can lead to further study of Drama or Performing Arts at an accredited vocational college or university.

WHAT DO I NEED TO JOIN THE COURSE?

Grade 4 in GCSE Drama or Performing Arts (or Merit at L2 BTEC equivalent). However, if this has not been taken, then considerable practical experience is required in Drama and/or Performing Arts.

Following an interview prospective students may be called to enjoy a group audition workshop to ensure suitability of the chosen Performing Arts course.

    CAN I TAKE ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS?

If you choose to study Drama and Theatre Studies, you will usually take it alongside two other A levels.

    HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

    • 40% - study of a practitioner and performance text leading to an examined devised performance and a written coursework portfolio
    • 20% teacher directed group performance based on a performance text. In addition a monologue of an extract from a performance text (externally assessed)
    • 40% written examination based on two set performance texts, and a live theatre experience

    WHAT ARE THE COSTS?

There are no costs to study this course. Students should budget for trips to performances and concerts in order to gain maximum benefit from all of the Performing Arts courses. These will take place periodically throughout the year at a cost of approximately £15 - £20 per trip.

    WHAT IS THE DURATION?

This is a two year course.
